MPL-3643 Brings Permissioned Securities to Solana

Metaplex has introduced MPL-3643, a tokenization standard designed to bring permissioned real-world assets and tokenized securities to Solana with onchain eligibility and transfer controls.

Metaplex Expands Solana Into Permissioned Assets

Metaplex, the protocol widely associated with Solana’s NFT infrastructure, has introduced MPL-3643, a tokenization standard designed for permissioned real-world assets (RWAs) and tokenized securities.

The standard addresses an important challenge for regulated assets moving onto public blockchains: blockchain ownership does not automatically mean that every wallet should be allowed to purchase, receive or transfer an asset. MPL-3643 is designed to put those restrictions directly into the tokenization process, allowing issuers to define who can participate and under what conditions.

Metaplex’s official developer documentation now lists MPL-3643 as a permissioned token standard for RWAs, expanding its infrastructure beyond traditional NFT-focused applications. Metaplex Developer Hub

How MPL-3643 Handles Investor Eligibility

MPL-3643 allows issuers to configure rules covering investor eligibility, transfer restrictions, jurisdiction requirements and lockup periods. These conditions can be checked before an asset is transferred to another wallet.

For example, an issuer could require an investor to meet specific verification requirements or restrict an asset to eligible participants in particular jurisdictions. A lockup condition could also prevent an investor from transferring the asset until a defined period has ended.

This creates a different model from standard permissionless tokens. Having a Solana wallet alone would not necessarily make someone eligible to receive an asset issued under MPL-3643. Instead, the wallet would have to satisfy the requirements established for that particular asset.

Onchain Checks Can Control Token Transfers

The approach is designed around Solana’s token infrastructure and the broader concept of programmable compliance. Solana’s Token Extensions provide additional functionality for token issuers, including mechanisms that can be used to introduce specialized token behavior.

One relevant feature is Transfer Hooks, which allow custom program logic to run when tokens are transferred. This type of functionality can be used to check conditions before a transfer is completed. Solana Token Extensions Documentation

Metaplex describes MPL-3643 as bringing “ERC-3643-equivalent functionality to Solana.” ERC-3643 itself is an Ethereum standard designed for compliant transfers of permissioned security tokens, including automated eligibility checks through onchain identity infrastructure. Reusable Verification Could Reduce Repeated Checks

Another component of MPL-3643 is reusable investor verification. Metaplex says the standard can work with identity providers and the Solana Attestation Service, allowing verified information associated with a wallet to be reused across participating applications.

The Solana Attestation Service provides infrastructure for verifiable credentials and can support information such as identity or compliance-related attestations. This type of system can help applications verify claims without requiring every piece of underlying personal information to be placed directly onchain.

Reusable verification could reduce the need for investors to repeat similar checks when accessing multiple tokenized products. However, verification for one asset would not automatically make an investor eligible for every other asset because individual issuers can maintain their own requirements.

Solana Applications Could Support MPL-3643

MPL-3643 is planned for integration with several established Solana applications, including Orca, Raydium, Solflare, Jupiter and Phantom, according to the source material.

Those integrations could connect permissioned assets with trading venues and wallets already used across the Solana ecosystem. For tokenized securities, access to familiar infrastructure can be important because issuing a token is only one part of creating an onchain financial market.

The standard is currently described as being in limited-access alpha, so its broader availability and adoption will depend on future development and integrations.

Metaplex Moves Beyond Its NFT Roots

MPL-3643 represents another step in Metaplex’s expansion beyond its original association with NFTs. The organization maintains a broad open-source ecosystem for digital assets and Solana development, with its official links and programs documented through its developer hub. The new standard adds infrastructure for assets that cannot operate under the same unrestricted transfer model as typical crypto tokens. That makes permissioned tokenization a distinct use case from conventional NFTs and permissionless fungible tokens.

The development also follows Metaplex’s broader expansion into asset issuance and trading infrastructure, adding a compliance-focused component for real-world assets and tokenized securities.

What MPL-3643 Means for Solana RWA Tokenization

The significance of MPL-3643 is its focus on combining regulated-asset requirements with public blockchain infrastructure. Tokenized securities require more than a digital representation of ownership; issuers may also need mechanisms for investor eligibility, transfer restrictions, jurisdiction controls and compliance verification.

The new standard is designed to address these requirements at the token level while using Solana infrastructure. Metaplex’s official documentation identifies MPL-3643 specifically as a permissioned token standard for RWAs, signaling its intended role in the network’s growing tokenization infrastructure. The next stage will be the development of the standard, its progression beyond limited-access alpha and the depth of integration with wallets, trading venues and identity providers. If those components develop further, MPL-3643 could provide issuers with another framework for bringing permissioned real-world assets and tokenized securities onto Solana.
