Solana Leads Major Cryptocurrencies Higher
Solana led gains among major cryptocurrencies on Wednesday as Bitcoin remained close to $64,000, showing relative resilience despite a sharp selloff in global semiconductor stocks. BTC traded around $64,250, gaining slightly on the day and about 1% over the past week.
Solana rose roughly 2% to approach $77, making it the strongest-performing major cryptocurrency during the session. Ether also advanced around 1% to slightly above $1,900, while XRP recovered nearly 1% to trade just below $1.
Bitcoin Holds Firm as Crypto Stays Resilient
Bitcoin's ability to remain near $64,000 stands out against the weakness in technology and semiconductor markets. The cryptocurrency has gained about 1% over the past seven days despite rising bond yields and renewed pressure on global equities.
Tron added roughly 0.5% to trade near $0.33, while Dogecoin gained a similar amount to around $0.07. BNB was one of the few major tokens to decline, slipping slightly above $600 and remaining down about 2% for the week.
Bitcoin's market performance can be tracked through the official Bitcoin network website, while broader market data remains closely tied to movements in global risk assets.
Korean Chip Stocks Suffer Sharp Losses
The biggest move in traditional markets came from South Korea, where Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both dropped more than 7%. The selloff pushed the country's Kospi index down more than 6% and dragged MSCI's Asia Pacific index lower by around 2%.
The weakness extended across the semiconductor industry. An Asian semiconductor index declined more than 3% after the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 5% on Tuesday, marking its worst session since late July.
Rising Bond Yields Add Pressure
Behind the technology-stock selloff is a broader increase in global bond yields. The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since 2007, while the 10-year yield approached levels last seen in early 2025.
Higher borrowing costs are particularly important for companies investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure because expensive financing can increase the cost of large technology and data-center projects.
U.S. Treasuries stabilized somewhat on Wednesday, with the 10-year yield easing about one basis point to 4.69%. Gold also recovered, rising as much as 0.6% above $4,360 per ounce after dropping almost 2% during the previous session.
Fed Minutes Become the Next Market Catalyst
Investors are now focused on the Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes, scheduled for release at 2 p.m. ET. The minutes could provide additional clues about how policymakers view inflation, economic growth and the path of interest rates.
Markets are also watching upcoming comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium. Expectations around monetary policy remain an important driver for both stocks and cryptocurrencies.
The Federal Reserve's official website provides the central bank's monetary-policy statements, meeting materials and economic data.
Rate-Cut Expectations Remain Uncertain
A Reuters survey found that 94 of 104 economists expect the Federal Reserve to keep its benchmark interest rate in the 3.50% to 3.75% range during September.
Market pricing also indicated roughly a 68% probability of no rate change. That suggests investors remain divided over whether the central bank will adjust policy as markets continue to respond to inflation and economic data.
For crypto traders, interest-rate expectations are especially important because lower rates can improve liquidity conditions and increase demand for risk-sensitive assets, while higher yields can make cash and government bonds relatively more attractive.
Altcoins Show Mixed Performance
While Solana and Ether moved higher, gains were not evenly distributed across the crypto market. XRP recovered during the session but remained negative over the seven-day period, while BNB continued to lag.
Hyperliquid's HYPE token fell more than 1% to slightly above $58 but remained the strongest major cryptocurrency over the previous seven days, with gains of approximately 7%.
The mixed performance suggests traders are still selectively allocating capital rather than broadly buying the entire crypto market.
Crypto Decouples From the Semiconductor Selloff
The sharp decline in semiconductor stocks has not translated into an equivalent move lower across major cryptocurrencies. That divergence is notable because crypto and technology stocks have often traded as correlated risk assets.
Bitcoin's relative stability while semiconductor shares fell sharply could indicate that crypto traders are currently responding more strongly to digital-asset-specific flows and expectations around monetary policy.
However, the relationship between crypto and broader risk markets could change quickly if rising bond yields begin putting sustained pressure on global liquidity.
What Traders Are Watching Next
The immediate focus is on the Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes and upcoming central-bank commentary. Any signal that policymakers are becoming more or less willing to adjust interest rates could influence both equities and cryptocurrencies.
For Bitcoin, holding above $64,000 keeps the market relatively stable after its recent moves. Solana's stronger performance gives the altcoin market a separate source of momentum, although continued gains will depend on broader liquidity and risk appetite.
The contrast between resilient crypto prices and the sharp semiconductor selloff makes the next few trading sessions important. If bond yields continue rising, risk assets could face additional pressure; if yields stabilize and monetary-policy expectations become more supportive, cryptocurrencies could continue to outperform.
